CLUB MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
VISTA CLUB HISTORY
Our club was chartered on February 1, 1989 under the name, “Toastmousters.” We were a Disney club and met in the Team Disney building. We were an open club, which meant anyone could join, regardless of whether they worked at Disney or not.
Because our name intrigued people, our club grew at a steady pace and within four short years of being chartered we had 40 members.
In April 1993, we were informed that the Disney Toastmasters club in California was made up of 100% Disney employees and in order to be consistent, our club membership would have to be the same. If we chose not to eliminate the non-Disney members from our club, we would no longer be able to meet on Disney property, and would not be able to keep the Disney name. We took a vote, and decided not to split up the club. That provided two very big challenges: what would our new name be, and where would we meet?
We chose the name Vista because it meant both “future” and “horizon.” We felt this was very appropriate, as we were sure that our future was bright, and good things were on the horizon.
Finding a new meeting location proved to be a daunting task. As Toastmasters is a non-profit organization, we found it very difficult to find a place to meet that was free to use.
While we were searching for a permanent location, we met in different members’ homes, church meeting rooms, Valencia Community College and Windermere Library. Since 2004, we have been regularly meeting at the Southwest Library in the Dr. Phillips neighborhood.
Through it all, we have managed to maintain a lively and active membership as well as being recognized by Toastmasters International for our commitment to our membership’s needs!
